This is a sculpture by Michaelangelo called "The PIETA" meaning pity or compassion. We have also been to Florence and seen another Sculptture of the same name [there are 4 in all]
Standing in front of it gave a human and maternal side to Jesus suffering on the Cross, much like the movie The Passion of the Christ did for me. Mums are deeply involved and deeply connected to their children and this is no less the case for Mary.
